What is the biggest trend this spring? It’s the ‘70s! Trends that flourished half a century ago return to the runways in new refreshed versions. What do the ‘70s throw into the mix? How do they inspire fashion designers? And finally – how do we wear clothes which are back in fashion after almost 50 years?

What defined the ‘70s style? The fashion was born from revolutionary sentiments expressed at the time not only in the United States, but also around the world. The Vietnam War was the main point of contention between the new and the older generation – young people did everything to demonstrate that they were independent, free and could do what they wanted.

Defiance was at the heart of this tumultuous decade. Fashion of the time was closely linked to the hippie movement – boho, loose-fitting clothes, bell bottoms and disco collars. These elements could already be spotted in September, when designers presented their spring collections and unanimously decided that it’s high time for the ‘70s to come back into fashion.

The ‘70s are in – how does the hippie decade inspire designers?

This spring women’s fashion is full of looks inspired by a decade defined by masters the like of Yves Saint Laurent. His legacy had a great influence on Hedi Slimane, who used to design for the brand. Today, he leads a controversial revolution at Celine and introduces ‘70s silhouettes into spring fashion, while Gucci celebrates the decade with wide leg trousers.

Catwalks are full of sheer flowy fabrics, ruffles and decorative sleeves, which are obvious references to the style of that decade. Women’s and men’s fashion in the ‘70s was also all about disco collars, vivid colours, boho jewellery and floral patterns, all of which rule the runways today.

What other vintage trends should we look out for? The ‘70s were all about colour, just as this year’s collections. Colourful patterns appear on dresses, trousers, tops or even jumpers. The decade was full of energy and bold trends, which is why psychedelic prints are all the rage again.

You can’t have the ‘70s, hippie fashion and boho without maxi dresses, which in early spring looks can be worn with suede boots or – on warmer days – with comfortable sneakers. If you want to find your perfect maxi dress visit the Vitkac online store, which offers a variety of looks and colours.

Another must have for women this season is a suit – and the ‘70s marked the peak of their popularity. The credit goes to Yves Saint Laurent, who inspired Marc Jacobs’s new collection. Colourful suits, hats, ruffles and pastels – the elements he uses come together to create a harmonious whole. Harmony is the key to understanding the ‘70s and becomes one of the main trends this season.

Where else can we find inspiration? As always, cinema and TV come to the rescue. Films such as “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, “American Hustle” and the series “Mad Men” are a great source of knowledge about the fashion of the ‘70s and in the case of the latter – also the ‘50s and ‘60s.
